Educational Camp: January of Collaborative Projects

Margaret Sargsyan

One of the tools regulating the educational activities of the employees and students in the Mkhitar Sebastatsi EduComplex is the educational calendar, which is published annually, monthly, and daily, and it coordinates the educational day of the educators and students in the schools, educational centers and laboratories of the EduComplex.

According to our curriculums four educational periods are fixed in the school year of the EduComplex: September-December, January, February-May, June. January and June are the periods of educational camps. During these camp periods the educational calendar becomes fuller reflecting the initiatives of the educational complex, making visible the viability of the author educational program, being an open project and connected with real life.

What is the essence of an educational camp? How does it differ from other educational periods? Separate procedures are developed in the branch schools of the EduComplex for the camp periods, which reflect the content and organization of the camp, project directions used for the camp groups of the given school.

Teachers publish camp projects on their blogs in advance, giving students and parents the opportunity to get acquainted with them, make additions and suggestions.

For the second educational period, the teachers compile a corresponding working plan, which is published in the relevant section of the educational blogs.

Both the second and fourth educational periods are distinguished by review and festival activities. Those are separate workouts, open, resulting in interesting EduComplex projects, that unite students of different age groups and different project groups.

Let me introduce this year’s winter reviews:

  • Digitech: the aim of this review is organization, mastering, self-learning and using the ICT tools. To take part in this review one should master some new educational IT tool and to present it at a master class lesson.
  • Ethnographic Festival the aim of which is assimilation, transfer and dissemination of national culture
  • Review of Science and Technical Projects; the aim is to present and disseminate the authorial, creative experience of teachers and students in general education, to summarize the new methods of organizing the teaching of natural sciences, mathematics, ecology and engineering sciences.
  • Winter Sports Games, Gymnastics Review; the aim is to introduce and disseminate the authorial, creative sports experience of teachers, students, families in general education, to acquire and develop skills for a healthy lifestyle through winter sports, sports walks, climbing heights and gymnastics.

Collaborative projects, the learner-teacher project component, meetings with professionals, parents, trips, going on hiking and outdoor trainings have a special place in the camp agendas.

Let's highlight some important directions of camp activities.

  • The camp period is an important stage in reflecting the learner's individual choice, initiative, and creativity.
  • During the camp period, the daily routine is made according to the learner’s preference: the learner himself/herself chooses the projects he / she wants to participate in.
  • The learner can suggest projects he / she wants to implement, get the teacher’s advice and support.
  • The camp projects are collaborative and open.
  • Camp groups are not organized by grades; they are learners gathered around the project who may be of different ages.
  • The camp period is characterized educational trips and hiking.
  •  Meetings, lessons organized and coordinated by parents and public figures are typical of the camp period.
  •  During the camp period learner-teacher project is carried out, which is a good way for the learners to communicate, collaborate and transfer skills.
  • The projects carried out by the educational clubs
  • The collaborative projects suggested by the open studios, educational centers and workshops.

Assessment of camp activities is carried out without assessment marks, taking into account the forms of multi-component educational activities of students.

The camp stages are summarized with report stories of the learners and teachers. The reports are published on educational blogs. Reporting stories show the achievements of work and also tell about what did not work so that we can see the reasons. All these materials may indicate the development of the next educational camp.

Reporting materials can be in the form of exhibitions, concerts, round tables, presentations, etc.
