Online TV as a Tool for Education

The idea of creating online TV came to my mind when working with the third graders I noticed how much the children enjoy looking at themselves in the mirror and speaking to themselves endlessly telling something. Television itself is a role play game: an announcer, a guest of the show and nonstop questions and answers. What do children love very much?...Asking questions! Why not help them to find the answers to their questions?

TV can’t do without a real pavilion. We began thinking over the matter: What kind of pavilion shall we create just in our classroom so that it would be colorful, interesting, not cover too much space and fit the classroom. So we began designing it. Each learner drew his/her own design of the pavilion with the program Paint. Then we discussed together and turned to the specialists for advice. We also chose the colors and the form. Everybody, including our parents, helped us, and we created the most joyful TV pavilion studio, and we named it “Joyful TV Pavilion” .

Then we began studying the way real journalists and cameramen work, took part in a few master class lessons and visited the Sebastatsi TV pavilion. Ani Sargsyan showed and told us how they with the video camera so that it would be easy for us to edit the film, and the film-photo students shared their photo taking experience with us.

Then we began to prepare for our first TV show. Our first guest was to be Ashot Bleyan. We prepared questions, invited spectators.

We invite different interesting people to our pavilion. We usually choose the topic beforehand. We collect information about the topic from the Internet, encyclopedias, books and then work out questions to be asked to the guest. For example, when many people got the flu, we invited a doctor to our pavilion, and she told the viewers of our TV how to prevent this illness.

We have also begun learning to edit films. We are studying the computer program Wondershare Video Editor. We shoot short video films and then edit them.

Several learners have already made TV shows based on their preferences. For example, Janna Hakobyan is telling about her favorite film, Vahe – about handicrafts, Hayk – about science experiments, Sos – about plants.

We have begun inviting parents to our pavilion. They speak on different topics, play musical instruments and do science experiments.

The project helps the learners to be free and at ease. It gives them an opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills, express themselves and develop their interests. The learners work both independently and in groups and create their author shows. Online TV is a big interesting world having no boundaries. It helps to discover and learn.
